Dr. Stephen Hansen M.D.
Dr. Stephen Hansen and his wife Emily have been blessed with four sons, a beautiful daughter-in-law, and a grandson. They enjoy living in Pocatello, Idaho and love the beautiful sunsets. Dr. Hansen was raised by Dr. Terry and Mary Hansen in Pocatello, having graduated from Highland High School in 1987. Dr. Hansen’s father is a retired ophthalmologist who has been a wonderful example of being a husband, father, and physician. Emily was raised on a farm near Dietrich, Idaho and enjoys teaching piano lessons. They met in college and started their family while students at BYU in Provo, UT. Emily has been a wonderful support for Dr. Hansen throughout all of his medical career and has been with him the whole way, from before the MCAT to his current practice in Idaho.
Dr. Hansen served an LDS mission in Haiti and then completed college at BYU where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in English with University Honors. He then graduated from the University of Illinois with combined MD/MBA degrees through the Medical Scholars Program, and then completed residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Creighton University combined program in Omaha. He subsequently completed a spine surgery fellowship at the Indiana Spine Group in Indianapolis, Indiana. He underwent further training in endoscopic spine surgery at the SMART Clinic.
Dr. Hansen enjoys humanitarian work in Haiti and started a not-for-profit entity to benefit Haiti, United Haitian Orthopaedic Philanthropists, Inc (UHOP). He has been to Haiti several times for medical and surgical volunteer work, including after the devastating earthquake of 2010. He also completed an Ironman triathlon to raise money for another volunteer organization, Save the Children. Dr. Hansen enjoys personal fitness and has participated in Marathons, triathlons, and other endurance events. Dr. Hansen loves the quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Every man I meet is my superior in some way; in that I learn of him.”
Dr. Hansen has a unique approach to treating the spine, as he provides a complete breadth of nonoperative and operative treatments of the spine. He provides nonoperative spinal treatments (such as epidural injections, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation), more advanced interventions (such as kyphoplasty and spinal cord stimulators), traditional spinal surgery (anterior and posterior decompressions with or without fusions), motion-preserving surgeries (lumbar and cervical disc replacements), and the least invasive spinal surgeries offered (endoscopic spine surgery). He is committed to providing patients with the best possible care.
